Hello Ward 13,

Welcome to the June 2024 newsletter with news and events from Ward 13.

As we step into June, the sun is shining brightly, bringing with it the warmth of summer. With temperatures rising, it’s crucial to stay sun safe. Remember to wear protective sunscreen and clothing, stay hydrated, and take cooling breaks as needed to ensure your outdoor activities are both enjoyable and safe. Three of our city’s pools are open early, providing a perfect spot for families to cool off.

We have some exciting renewal infrastructure work being carried out and it will prepare for the new downtown developments coming our way. This will ensure our community is equipped to handle future growth and provide improved services to all residents.

We’ve seen our first successful office-to-residential conversion begin at Dundas and Richmond. This marks a significant milestone in our efforts to revitalize downtown and provide more housing options.

Additionally, we’re expecting the release of our encampment strategy and updates to the pathways to housing for our unhoused as part of the whole community system response on June 18th. This strategy will play a crucial role in addressing homelessness in our city.

In other news, the Soho Neighbourhood Association is being reignited, and residents of the neighbourhood are requested to attend the first meeting on June 7th. Your participation is vital in shaping the future of our community.

I also have a town hall scheduled for June 20th, where we’ll discuss various issues and initiatives impacting our ward.

Lastly, let’s come together to support our London Knights as they play in the Memorial Cup tonight. Please cheer our Knights on and show your community spirit!

Please note, there will also be turn restrictions in place at the Wellington and York intersection impacting both east and westbound traffic.

Clarence Street is closed at York Street with no access to/from York Street. Lane reductions on York Street between Clarence Street and Wellington Street will remain in place until the road is fully closed in late July 2024.

All traffic will be moved onto the south side of York Street to accommodate construction activities on the north side of the street.

The sidewalk on the south side of York Street will remain open during construction, with the north side of York Street closed for construction. Signage will be used to help guide pedestrians in the area.

Work beginning on York Street as part of downtown sewer separation

Construction has begun on York Street, from Clarence Street to Wellington Street to replace aging sewer infrastructure. Installation of temporary signals and lighting will be underway for approximately 1-2 weeks as crews prepare the area for construction and upcoming lane closures.

The following traffic impacts for this year:

  • Closure of Clarence Street at York Street with no access to/from York Street
  • Reduced lanes on York Street between Clarence Street and Wellington Street from May to July 2024
  • Full closure of York Street from west of Clarence Street to Wellington Street from July to December 2024

About the Downtown Sewer Separation

As part of the Downtown Sewer Separation program, this project involves major improvements to underground municipal and private utility infrastructure. This important work is necessary to support a growing population, increase sewer capacity for new development and separate combined storm and sanitary sewers to help improve the health of the Thames River.

Construction Update: Cavendish Crescent Construction Project

UPDATE: After careful consideration, the City has been determined that five additional trees are required for removal due to size of the equipment necessary to install the project’s new large sanitary sewer pipes.

About this project

The City of London is planning a construction project to replace aging infrastructure that has met its expected lifecycle and to reroute municipal underground infrastructure to accommodate the future reconstruction of the West London Dyke.

This project includes:

  • Water-main replacement
  • Water service replacement to property line
  • Sanitary sewer replacement and rerouting of trunk sanitary sewer
  • Storm sewer replacement
  • Partial replacement of existing private drain connections (PDC)
  • Tree removals
  • Sidewalk replacement
  • Concrete curb and gutter replacement
  • New asphalt road surface

These pipes are replacing infrastructure that has reached the end of its life cycle and need to be installed at significant depths.

Proposed plan for pathways from encampments to housing

Whole of Community System Response for pathways from encampments to housing:

A key component of the proposed plan is transformational outreach, in which case management is provided to individuals living with complex needs.

This type of outreach works to help the highest acuity individuals access services and navigate the larger system within London, allowing them to move out of encampments and into shelters, hubs, or highly supportive housing.

These intentional interactions can include: problem-solving barriers to housing, securing identification, navigating income supports, mediating past conflicts with family/friends in the hopes of reunification, connecting people into city-wide programs and services effectively, and advocating within health and justice systems.

Londoners are invited to ask questions, provide comments, and speak with representatives from the City of London and partner organizations.

A final encampment strategy and implementation plan is expected to be presented to Council at the June 18th meeting of the Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee.

The 28th annual London Cares Curb Hunger Campaign begins

The London Cares Curb Hunger campaign, in partnership with the London Food Bank, to collect food for individuals and families in need are requesting Londoners, if they can, to donate fresh food, non-perishable food, or make a financial donation during the summer months – a traditionally slower period for donations.

The London Cares Curb Hunger campaign is the longest running partnership of its kind in Canada. In 2023, residents, businesses, and community partners participated in another successful Campaign to support the London Food Bank, collecting a total equivalent of 86,880 pounds of food, with even more fresh produce grown through the Campaign’s Grow-a-Row and Adopt a Plot.

How you can participate:

Between Now and June 8 Londoners can help in the following ways:

  • Fresh Food Donations
    • Both fresh and non-perishable foods continue to be accepted at the Food Bank, located at 926 Leathorne Street.
  • Non-Perishable Food Donations
    • Non-perishable food donations can be left at your local fire hall or at participating grocery stores. Store locations can be found at londonfoodbank.ca/donate-food.
  • Financial Donations
    • Online donations at www.londonfoodbank.ca are the quickest way to help the London Food Bank acquire fresh food. Financial donations give the Food Bank the necessary resources to help reach London’s most vulnerable, including individuals and families living unsheltered.
  • Plant a Row, Grow a Row
    • Londoners can sign up to help Grow-a-Row for the Food Bank in their backyard or community gardens. Growing your own produce at home is a great activity for families and households, and any extra produce from your garden can be donated to the Food Bank.
  • Adopt a Plot
    • The London Food Bank now has on-site garden beds to grow vegetables for use in client hampers. Groups are welcome to sign up to adopt a plot of these gardens to help plant, raise, and harvest vegetables. Visit londonfoodbank.ca/adopt-a-plot for more information about this program.
